First year Chemistry is all about being introduced to the fundamentals of Chemistry. We look at safety in the laboratory, apparatus, separating techniques, water and finally chemical elements. Pupils reside in Chemistry for 11 weeks before moving on to another Science.

Second year continues to look at important areas of Chemistry such as how chemicals react, how we can speed up such reactions; acid reactions and how to be able to analyse different chemicals. Near the end of this course we begin a module from Intermediate 2 Chemistry; Atomic Structure.
Intermediate 2 Chemistry is a two year course which follows on and builds on the material covered in S1 & 2. This is a challenging course which is extremely useful and a good precursor to Higher Chemistry.
Higher Chemistry is a very popular subject in St. Aloysius' College. Pupils who plan to study Medicine, Veterinary Medicine or Pharmacy will be required to study this subject. Chemistry is a challenging yet enjoyable course; pupils with a good knowledge of Chemistry are regarded as having good analytical and problem solving skills.

This course develops the concepts covered in Higher Chemistry. Advanced Higher Chemistry requires the pupil to become more independent, and as such one of the components of this course is a 20 hour project of the pupils choice. A good working knowledge of AH Chemistry will make life much easier for those pupils who intend to study Chemistry, Pharmacy, Chemical Engineering, Medicine or Veterinary Medicine.
